Hi My Mums Dad was 3rd Engineeron the S.S.Sagamore sunk by U-49 3 rd March 1917,with one torpedo port side amidships.Sank within 30 minuts.# lifeboats got away But were diapersed over night then a storm came up.Two of the lifeboats were never seen again. The lifeboat my grandad was in had 17 survivors,But the weren't picked up till the 12th March 1917,by the Flue funnel Lines S.S.Deucalion.By that time only 7 had survived. On arrival at Capetown 5 had to have their feet amputated due to frostbite and gangreene, but not my grandad. He was sent home but my Mum remembered he was in pain all the time and they started to take a toe off and bits of flesh.Itwasn't till 1920 that they really started to work on him and By 1922 he had had bother lower limbs amputated an inch or so below the knees.I would be very interested in a photo of the U-49 and its Commander as My Children, grand children and G/G?Children are giving me a bit of a "hurry Up" due to the old age problem.Thank You for reading my request and hoping you may be able to help.best Regards Ken & Rita Berry
