To Ken Berry, Simon S. Dan Quale, and Rhiannon Lewis,
I wrote on the 8th August 2010 concerning my grandfather (who unfortunately I never knew). He was Peter Cummins, Cpt. of the 'Sagamore' torpedoed by U 49 on the 3rd. March 1917 approx. 150 miles W. of the Fastnet rock. The only info. I have is a letter from two survivors, A. Woolerton and Frank Hutchinson, which was handed down from my grandmother to my father who was only 3 at the time. My kids are also pestering me for information concerning the family, they've suddenly become genealogicaly conscious. Any additional info. would be more than welcome, especially as to what happened after the torpedo struck. All I have heard is that he was in one of the life boats that was probably swamped. The condtions must have been horrific.
I wrote years ago to the 'Militärgeschichtliches Forschungsamt, and they mentioned the sinking of U 49 by the ship 'British Transport' and they sent me a photo of UB 49 (not the right one).
Any information would be a great help, I'm afraid I discovered this excellent site rather late.
Best wishes Mike
