No entries since mine of 21.2.15. By way of brief history on loss of this vessel, she was carrying a cargo of Maize from Saigon. She stopped in Gibraltar to pick up a convoy with war having broken out. In the approaches to the English Channel, the convoy split - some to London and rest to Liverpool. Zig Zagging up the Irish Sea brought the convoy close inshore. As the convoy was executing a port hand turn, the Gleneden struck an underwater object. This transpired to be Carreg Hen or Roscolyn Rock, a rocky outfall to the south and west of Holy Isle off Anglesey. The rock was charted as having a greater depth than was in fact the case. These few feet of difference together with the effects of a sou westerly gale resulting in her pitching and 'scending and the deepening of the draft of the ship due to the port hand turn resulting in her striking the rock and becoming badly holed. Separated from the Convoy by necessity in the middle of the night, the Captain tried to carry on to Liverpool but the ship was making too much water so he deliberately beached her on the east coast of Anglesey on Irishman's Spit near Puffn Island from where her crew were subsequently taken off my Moelfre lifeboat. She was later declared a constructive total loss after some of the cargo had been salvaged. Although not a direct casualty of war it was due to the war that she was steaming so close inshore and hit the rock. The coincidences which led to her loss are remarkable.
