You're misinterpreting how attributions are assigned. You don't necessarily need any sort of documentation from the U-boat to do it. UB 72 met up with U 86 on May 7, 15 miles SW of the Isle of Man. From that point, you can work forward and backward to match up the sinkings that no surviving U-boat claimed.
Note that there appear to be no statements from UB 72's survivors in German files.
The sinking of SANDHURST in particular is of interest. If we can find the time of that sinking (should be at TNA) and exactly when EVELEEN sailed, we'd have a good idea exactly whether UB 72 might have sunk EVELEEN.
I have U 86's KTB on microfilm and will see if there's anything of interest in there on UB 72. I know that U 86 did not claim EVELEEN.
