Hi,
I took the liberty of crossposting your info to the GWF and there is some interest there in helping with identifying the bust. Can you do a rubbing of the writing on the base and post it here? I will post the rubbing to GWF and that may help in identifying what it says. Consensus is that it is German script but the rubbing may help to clear up precisely what it says.
One area of concern is that the person on the bust appears to be wearing a regular suit, and not a Kriegsmarine uniform Can you give a bit of the backstory as to how you acquired the bust and what you were told as to its history? Any little tidbit may be of help.
There was of course a ship of that same name (SMS Deutschland) which was scrapped and another possibility is that this came from that Deutschland and not the u-boat of the same name. We'll see...
Thanks,
-Daniel
