Hi Tom,
well, troop convoy H.X. 40 left New York (!) on the evening of July 4th, 1918, consisting of 13 ships, british auxiliary cruiser HMS VICTORIAN and armored cruiser USS PUEBLO. PUEBLO returned to New York on July 15th.
One of the ships later left the convoy for Bordeaux while another one joined at sea.
The destroyer escort for the North Channel and Irish Sea was met on July 16th at 6 a.m. and on July 17th at 4 a.m. off the Maidens (North Channel) 5 ships, 3 destroyers and 1 Sloop were detached to Glasgow.
The remainder of the convoy, including 36.000 troops (!) reached Liverpool safely on July 17th, 6.30 p.m.
Source: The National Archives, Kew, London, file No. ADM 137/2657, convoys H.X. etc.
So, no ship torpedoed in this convoy and no U-boat sunk! This troop convoys (H.X. ..) first departed from Halifax, N.S., but in May 1918 that was changed to New York.
