On 22nd July 1918, the "Q" ship Q. 29, sailing under the name of "Dargle", was in action with a German submarine. The action took place 55.12 N 01.21 W, in the region of the mouth of the Tyne. The S/M fired three shots at "Dargle" but none hit. "Dargle returned fire and struck the conning tower with their third shot. The S/M had commenced submerging once "Dargle" opened fire. The whole action from "Dargle opening fire to S/M disappearing was two minutes.
Does any one know which S/M this was? UB 34 and UB 77 may have been in the area on the date in question. The crew of the "Dargle" were not sure if the S/M's gun crew mentioned to get below before the S/M submerged.
Most of the above is from Lt Forster's ("Dargle's". C.O.) report to SNO Granton.
Thanks for any help.
