Hello Stavros,
to be true we all benefit from this thread as we within the usual German files can't find out more on these special operations. We still don't have the Sonderbericht from both boats but now we know what happened. And you, of course, will get some details as of the German U-Boats used.
Just to be made it clear: "source microfilm" and "source war diary", there is no difference appart from the way of documentation:
The Original war diary, held at the German Federal Archives (Military Archive) in Freiburg/Breisgau, is paper work. One of several copies typed after the return from patrol and collected for every single U-Boat to cover the whole "life" of the Boat.
The microfilm copies used by Michael and Simon where from the US Archives NARA and the Deutsches U-Boot-Museum Cuxhaven, the microfilms held by the latter orignally came from NARA. These microfilms were filmed after WW 2 while the Allies where in possession of the origianl paperwork, now back in Freiburg.
O.k., I just can give you the exact German wording for UB 68's war diary:
23.II.18 Pola, 5h Nm, Wind N.N.O. 2-3, See 2, diesig, leicht bewölkt
Ausgelaufen gem. Operationsbefehl.
Handelskrieg führen im westlichen Mittelmeer.
Hauptoperationsgebiet Golf von Genua und Lion.
Durch die Kanäle gesteuert.
27.II.18 Ionisches Meer
siehe Sonderbericht
The phrase "Sonderaufgabe ausgeführt, siehe Sonderbericht" originates from the summary of this war patrol which was created by the Flotilla.
Just one other note:
The greek officer mentioned an other U-Boat met in the middle of the Adriatic, that could have been the famous U 35.
U 35 returned to Cattaro on 13.03.1918, and on 15.03.1918 at 13.40h left Cattaro for maintenance at Pola.
UB 50 had an short stopover at Curzola on 15.03.1918, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., and than continued down the Adriatic.
So there easily could have been an meeting of those two Boats in the evening, most possibly passing some distance away and sending greeting via W/T or flaggs...
Neither of these two Boats mentions this meeting within the war diary.
So, Simon should follow with the original wording from UB 50's war diary for the day of departure.
