Hi guys,

generally I'd go with Oliver too but I think the lifeboat must have been hit between the beginnig of shelling the steamer and Hartwig's decision to close at point blank range. Hartwig states in his KTB that he started sinking the steamer after he had seen the lifeboats in a safe distance. The crew was never a target what he aimed at.

Finally, it was absolutely Not usual for officers of the Imperial German Navy to kill the crews of ships they had sunk. They were no murderers. Most of them were gentlemen like their opponents too. In every army or navy you will find a "black sheep " but that's not only a German problem.
