Chris,
Oliver Lörscher found UC 56's KTB at Freiburg a couple of years ago. It operated off the English east coast from January 5 to January 22, 1918.
The problem with the involvement of U 84 or U 93 was that those were High Seas Fleet boats. Suadicani would have to arrange any such escape attempt with officers based in Germany, to involve a submarine based in Germany. This seems a bit unlikely. Also, U 93 is in any case probably not the answer, as per Spindler, her patrol areas was from the Channel Islands to Penmarch. U 84 was assigned to operate between Penmarch and Ile de Ré, which also might be a problem.
A January 12th to 18th escape attempt time frame lines up well with UC 50's patrol. The previous boat in the area was UC 17, which arrived back in Flanders on January 15th. The next boat that I have operating in the Bay of Biscay is UB 59, which only sailed on January 20th. So could the two separate operations you mention — the escape attempt and scouting the area — both have been assigned to a single boat, UC 50 under Kplt. Rudolph Seuffer?
best wishes,
Michael
