I'm still hanging in with this topic. This post concerns U 95 which only came to my attention in the last few days when a relative in the US reminded me that her grandfather was the captain of the merchant vessel Belle of England sunk by torpedo 27 July 1917 off Fastnet. He was my great uncle. He spent three days adrift with others in a lifeboat before rescue. U 95 was the culprit.

I then noticed that U 95 disappeared 16 January 1918, lost all hands (later identified off Hardelot, France) (uboat.net). As you will see from the other posts on this subject, the periods up to and around 18 January 1918 are of great interest to me because of UC 61 commander Georg Gerth's intended escape by u-boat from Boyardville. Too much of a coincidence I know, but I love the chase.

I see that U 95 had previously operated off Land's End (2 January 1918). Does anyone know whether U 95 was on her way home or on her way out for a new mission when lost? Do her last orders exist? And, if the reasons for the loss are obscure, why is the date of loss (16 January) so precise?

Best wishes
Chris
