Hello Michael
An update to this topic of a year ago.
The family of Erich Gerth, UC 53, has been found - remarkably all four children are alive. They have been kindly scouring their photographic records for me and have come up with an excellent find (among many). It is a picture of Erich Gerth and Rudi Seuffer, UC 50, in uniform (no doubt it is the two of them), enjoying themselves in what looks like an officers' mess. The photo was captioned by Erich's wife and she says they were 'best friends' and that Rudi did not return from a 1918 mission.
You will remember that Georg Gerth was told in a secret message from Bruges that 'Rudi' was on his way to Georg's prison camp on an island off the French Atlantic coast. We speculated whether Georg would know that the non-specific 'Rudi' was actually Rudi Seuffer. This picture suggests that he did as Seuffer was the 'best friend' of his brother Erich. The irony then is that Rudi may well died on his way to help in the rescue of Georg, Erich's brother.
Best wishes
Chris
