Well,
the war diary (Kriegstagebuch / KT is not what it sounds like, an continued diary.
To be true each U-boat after return from an patrol had to made an report in several copies. At the Admiralstab these reports where compiled and filed for each boat, and the time between the patrols (mainly periods of overhaul) where filled up with small pieces of paper to establish the whereabout of this particular sub during that interphase.
In the case of U 154 and others of course the German Admiralstab tried to compile as much of information of the last cruise from "secondary sources" ...
