Hello
I don't know if my search for background material on sea cadet training for u-boat officers was of general interest. Just in case it was to some forum watchers, and they were as clueless as me, here are some of my results in looking for sources, apart from the year crew lists supplied by Michael.
1) Papers for the Marine-Kabinett in the Marinearchiv at Freiburg holds files for naval sea cadet selection and education, promotion of naval officers, marriage applications, etc.
2) Holger H Herwig, The German Naval Officer Corps, A Social and Political History, 1890-1918 (Clarendon Press, Oxford 1973). This is very useful.
3) I found two Reichs-Marine-Amt books in German on eBay at reasonable prices: - Vorschriften für die Ergänzung des Seeoffizierkorps nebst - Ausführungsbestimmungen (Berlin 1909)
- Vorschriften für die Ausbildung der Seekadetten auf den Schulschiffen (Berlin, 1910)
4) These biographies of later-famous sea cadets had useful parts of early chapters on the cadet process and experience (no doubt there are many more):
- Patrick J Kelly, Tirpitz and the Imperial German Navy (Indiana University Press, 2011)
- Michael Mueller, trans. Geoffrey Brooks, Canaris, The Life and Death of Hitler’s Spymaster (Greenhill, Barnsley 2017)
- Peter Padfield, Dönitz, The Last Führer, Portrait of a Nazi War Leader (Victor Gollancz, London 1984)
Mother's Day in Britain next Sunday.
Best wishes
Chris
