I don't know the answer, but it is a good bet that you are right. Erich Gerth only took U 35 out - just the once - because his own U 47 was undergoing long-term repairs. This voyage, as you see in my first reply, was not successful because of mechanical problems and was curtailed. However, within a few weeks, the boat was deemed a candidate for the return to Kiel and so must have been passed seaworthy. If not, it would have joined the other scuttled failures. In any event, U 35 was not seaworthy enough and after getting to the Bay of Biscay had to be interned. From other first-hand reports I have read, several of the boats that made a successful return to the Baltic had seriously mechanical problems before and during the long voyage around Ireland.
