Foreign crews serving in WW1

Hi,
Does anyone have knowledge of foreigners serving on U-boats?
The reason I ask this is because an Irish ancestor served as an engineer during WW1. He survived to "escape" to America in 1919, before returning to live in Eire - presumably after 1922.
Any comments would be appreciated.
