Fantastic, thanks! I mailed and went to bed, but you answered within half an hour. I could not be more impressed!

I am contacting the Swedish meteorological institute for weather data for a picture of why the lifeboat(s) did not save the crew, but even if the info will be available it could only provide theories. I presume that the crew were able to board the lifeboats, but that is only a presumption based on the scuttling info. How the 11 men perished will never be fully known.

The story of how the body of the captain was identified is a fascinating one, though. I hope to finalise a text about Hammar II where it will be included.

At the time, the inhabitant of Sweden's west coast as well as police and other authorities had ample experience of corpses being washed to the shore. After Jutland, literally hundreds of British and German bodies was found and buried along the coast, including the German author who went under the pseudonym Gorch Fock.
