Yes, this is a true incident, in which U 84 was nearly sunk. The Q-ship was the Penshurst and the escort was the sloop HMS Alyssum.
The incident is described in detail in both Spindler (IV: pp 101-102) and the Naval Staff Monograph (XVIII: pp 211-214).
