Hi mates,
Michael´s guess is right. U 96 (Jeß) had an encounter with an airship in the forenoon of June 5th, 1918 in the vicinity mentioned in the request. In his war diary the commander gives the number of that airship as Z 48. U 96 opened fire with the 8.8 cm AA-gun at a range of 3,000 metres. The airship rose steeply higher, headed for U 96 and opened a rapid machine-gun fire. At a range of 1,500 metres U 96 dived. Shortly afterwards, at a depth of 45 metres, a medium depth charge was heard. The dropped bomb remained without effect.
Best regards
Simon S.
