Hi Clive,

the statement that von Arnauld fired only 6 torpedoes during his time as a submarine commander is not correct. In the case of the sinking of the steamer SOWWELL, it can be read in the war diary that he torpedoed the steamer without warning because it was armed with a gun on the stern and people were observed standing by the gun. The steamer, loaded with 6,130 tonnes of iron ore, sank within 2 minutes. 10 survivors were taken on board U 35. The following day, they were handed over to the lifeboats of the steamer LOWDALE, which was also sunk by U 35. Your great uncle may well have survived the sinking of his ship. Perhaps he was wounded and later succumbed to them. We will probably never know for sure.
