Any U-boat off North Carolina coast on 20 August 1943?

I have a report of a U-boat being attacked and bombed on 20 August 1943 15 miles Northeast of Avon (north of Cape Hatteras). The only U-boat I can even find off the East Coast at this point is U-566. I'm assuming this attack was possibly against a whale, but am curious if anyone can provide info as to other boats off the coast or near North Carolina at this time.
