Hi, My father, William George Bromley was one of the survivors of the Abosso. He was an RAF NCO returning from duty in Australia when he volunteered to escort the internees back to the UK. He had been in CapeTown, intended for another ship when they were transferred to the Abosso. He did not talk about the horrific events of that night very much (he could not swim) but was interviewed by the Times newspaper about his experience in 1980. After his return to the UK he was given the task by his CO to write to and visit, if possible all the British RAF families who had lost loved ones. I have some paperwork regarding this. He found it very difficult, one member lived near his family in Camden. My father died in 1997. I have been researching his RAF career and know that some of duties, especially later on were secret. he joined the RAF at the age of 18 and was trained as a gunnery expert with 220 sqaudron, initially based at RAF Thornaby. I would like to know if anyone has any more information that can be shared.
