Good morning Maarten,
My name is John Ebert. I live in Sydney Australia. I have had several communications with family members of men who survived and of those who drowned the sinking of the Abosso.
I read with great interest about your grandfather being a survivor of the Abosso. I have been undertaking a lot of research about the sinking of the Abosso. My main focus has been the fate of the internees returning from Australia. There were 43 internees on the Abosso and 42 drowned. There was one sole internee survivor an Italian man named Ugo Achille Bonelli. Only in the last 2 months I found his son in England after 2 years of intensive research. Ugo survived 3 separate u boat attacks-Arandora Star, Dunera and the Abosso. There were 29 Jews in the 43 internees.
I am very interested to learn more about your grandfatherfather who burned his hands letting the lifeboat down. Would you please advise me of your grandfather's name. There is a lot of information on the Dutch submariners including a photograph of the group before leaving Sydney.
My e mail address is lppac1@hotmail.com
I look forward to hearing from you and discussing Abosso-related matters with you.
Kindest regards and thank you for any information that you can send to me.
