U Boat flying Australian flag

Hello,

I hope you can help me. I am looking for information on an interesting item I own.
It is the "Union Jack" section from what was an Australian Ensign (flag). It has a Swastika/Eagle emblem on the letter M printed on it.
I have been told by the previous owner it came from a U boat and have found a photo of one flying on an active U boat during world war 2.
Could anyone explain this to me if I am correct?
