Locating a Kriegsmarine sailor's service record

I bought a clock (Junghans, no naval markings or serial #s) from a woman in Germany who kindly sent along an original photo of her father-in-law as a young sailor in the Kriegsmarine. She gave me his name and birth date. (Thankfully, he survived the war and lived to be 86.) She said he got the clock from his ship at war's end, but didn't know anything about his service record. How does one track this info down? Would like to know and let this nice woman know, too. Thanks much!
