Having seen no new development in identifying the loss of the U857 and U879, I have noticed currently on Wikipaedia listed U879 wreck discovered 1968 E of Cape Hatteras 36.34n/74.00w, while a wreck is off Cape Cod in 42.22n/69.46w. With both being IXC40 boats and if the two wrecks are of IXC40 type, although only U857 had an emblem, which alas no doubt is now lost, would identify her I wonder were both boats built to the same stats or did one have her forward casing altered to aid faster diving time?
