Just got a copy of Theodore Roscoe’s “United States Submarine Operations In World War II” today, and while skimming through it, noticed that he states that USS Herring probably sunk a German U-boat while attached to SubRon 50 out of Scotland in 1943. Upon looking at Herring’s patrol report for her 3rd patrol, I found where she claimed an attack on a surfaced U-boat shortly after midnight on 21 March 1943 in the Bay of Biscay. U-665 seems to have been lost some time after it’s last radio transmission on the 21st, although it’s loss is usually listed as on the 22nd. I’m wondering if U-665 was Herring’s victim.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
