Why Doenitz Lied?

Here¡¯s another question regarding Admiral Doenitz!
On 20 June, 1941, U-123 (Kptlt. Hardegen) sank a Portuguese freighter named Ganda near the coast of Morocco as Hardegen had mistaken it as a legitimate British vessel. In order to avoid the diplomatic uproar that might be caused therefore, Admiral Doenitz ordered Hardegen to falsify his KTB when he returned to base. This would be the second time when Doenitz ordered a Commander to fake KTB, the first time occurred when U-30 (Kptlt. Lemp) sank the British passenger liner Athenia in the beginning of the war.
However, at Nuernberg Doenitz ¡°testified under oath that Lemp¡¯s U-30 KTB after Athenia was the only case of counterfeiting a war diary that had occurred during the war¡±.
Why Doenitz lied about it at Nuernberg, especially when such deception was easy to be found out?
According to Gannon¡¯s ¡°Operation Drumbeat¡±, Hardegen¡¯s effort at deception ¡°was transparent to any discriminating eye¡±, e.g.: the faked KTB was double-spaced while the rest of it was single-spaced; also a different typewriter and ribbon were used, thus the faked KTB had modern typeface headings while the rest of the diary was in Gothic. To make matters worse, while they changed the content in KTB, they forgot to change their Schussmeldung, which recorded every detail of the sinking of Ganda!
I greatly appreciate any info that may clear my doubt as to why Admiral Doenitz lied about the faking of KTB, which seems quite unwise to me.
