<HTML>Hi Kameraden!
Thank you all for your input!
Craig, your supposition is interesting and in a sense I do hope it\'s the truth that Admiral Doenitz lied (or as MPC put it, \"conceal the truth\") for the sake of protecting his men rather than covering up for himself and trying to get out of trouble. Though it\'s true that Doenitz himself hadn\'t sunk the ship, nor ordered it, however, the Ubootwaffe\'s sinking of neutral ships could still be a strong charge against him, especially that it was he himself that ordered Hardegen to falsify the KTB. What really puzzled me was that Doenitz should have realized that it\'s almost impossible to conceal the fact considering the obvious flaws in the faked KTB, thus his effort in concealing the truth would doubtlessly end in vain, which may well harm his own image and honor in return.
I think you do have a point regarding why BdU didn\'t ask Komdts. to falsify any sinking of Amercian ships before the war had been formally announced between Germany and the US.
Fin and MPC, regarding Portugal, Gannon\'s book had a rather clear picture, which is not in accordance with Portugal\'s role as \"England\'s oldest ally\"--must be quite a disappointment to MPC.
According to Gannon\'s book, \"the diplomatic uproar caused by the incident [U-123\'s sinking of Ganda] had been somewhat allayed in Germany\'s favor by the fact that the Portuguese decided to blame the loss on a British submarine known to have been in the vicinity.\" (p52)
MPC, As to whether Doenitz told lies or he concealed the truth to protect his men (I\'m well aware of the delicate difference between these two expressions), I can only say that if Doenitz did tell lies, I hope that he was telling a white lie.
Best regards,
Ying
