<HTML>Hi JR,
In his book \'German U-Boat Losses During World War Two\' Axel Niestle speculates that the U-857 may have been sunk on the 30th of April 1945 by the US frigate \'Natchez\' and US destroyer escorts \'Bostwick\', \'Coffman\' and \'Thomas\' east of Cape Hatteras. Although these ships are credited with the sinking of the U-879, Niestle mentions that both these U-Boats could have operated in the area of the attack. Niestle also mentions that the attack carried out by USS \'Gustafson\' was very probably against a non-sub target. The original postwar assesment of this attack was changed by the Naval Historical Branch of the British Ministry of Defence in April 1994.
The entry for the U-857 in U-Boat Net also gives this information but also offers another possibility. This is that on the 18th April the U-857 was sunk by a homing torpedo dropped from an American Blimp.
Hope this has been of help.
All the best!
