ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, but some were taken to task and multitudes escaped and that cannot be RIGHT.
I am far from being a vengeance-seeking person, but in the first stages of WWll the German U-boat arm served their duties with a highly distinctive source of respect for merchantmen (see Webmaster's U35 page!). What caused the hierarchy to instruct their U-boat commanders to retaliate cruelty with cruelty.
It is FACT that the U-boat arm & the RN warships practiced courtesy & respect in 1939-41.
Yes, very sadly, it IS the true case that some sailors, soldiers and aircraftsmen DID treat the other side inhumanely, WAR drove them to act so. But there is still NO excuse for being allowed to escape war crimes. The RN rating in War in Atlantic is obviously still racked with a bad conscience over the Walker war crime and will remain so for the rest of his life.
I dread to think of the war crime in Vietnam ....
