Hitler was never a Navy man, but Doenitz indeed was since WWI .
Hitler never failed to address Doenitz by his rank and he never
lost once his temper at him, unlike the others...!
Doenitz needed Hitler\'s confidence in him, and he (Doenitz) never
concealed from Hitler any mistakes made by the German Navy nor
any Naval plans that ended in failure. This was a mutal relationship
between to two later in the war.
However, Doenitz was completely by surprise that Hitler made him
his successor in place of Goering. But Doenitz did not always see
eye to eye with Hitler nor his high ranking officers later in the war.
