<HTML> Chances are that the transmission and reception of morse code signals was at night while the Uboats were surfaced to charge batteries. Also at night multiple skips were possible at frequencies 3 to 10 megahertz to allow communications over the Atlantic. Depending on the Uboots location specific times might be best. Code [CW] signals are also the most reliable on a day to day basis. During the day these frequencies are not usable. Higher frequencies (above 10 megahertz [megacycles]) depended on conditions dictated by the sunspot activity within a given sunspot cycle and were not dependable. The biggest mistake by submarine command was too much CW traffic and use of hand keys, the latter operation individualized each sub\'s radio operators by their \"fist\" (recognizable by intercept operators). Strategically located intercept operators could then triangulate on these recognizable operators and determine locations if not in the deciphered message text.
What I\'m curious about is what frequencies they did use and how did they vary by location in the North and South Atlantic and the Caribean and Mediteranian Seas. Anybody know? Also, what kind of antennas, tuners and transmitting power (input) did they use?</HTML>
