I know nothing about radios but Type VII U-boats by Robert C. Stern (ISBN: 1-86019-855-4) has a good explanation of the radio equipment carried in the Type VII U-boat. It explains what each radio was used for, etc. It also contains a table of the frequencies they used. It doesn’t say much about what time of the day they were used though.

Another source of U-boat radio information is Captain Jerry Mason’s site: www.uboatarchive.net. Click on “Browse the Archives” then pick a boat and click on “Report on the Interrogation of Survivors”. Here you will find the U.S. Navy report on the interrogation of the survivors from the National Archives. There is usually a section dealing with the radio equipment. There are sections on a lot of interesting technical topics there as well. You need to look at more than one boat though, as there is considerably more radio information on some of the boats than on others.
