Have you read the book \"Silent Hunters\"? That also has some very good stories that are very moving. The best one is the one from Erich Topp about his best friend, Kapt. Endrass. That is a tear jerker. I highly recommend it.
This story you mentioned definitely shows that humanity will prevail and that it is difficult in times of war to be humane. Hardegen did the best he could, he was both an excellent warrior and a humane one as well.
