Hi George,
Thank you so much for your input!
Wow, you¡¯ve got an autographed photo of Hardegen? Good for you! I hereby attached an autographed photo of him that I found on the net, I wonder whether this is the one you have bought. The displayed one cost quite some money, almost $400.
Yes, the part of their celebrating Christmas on board during U-123¡¯s first American patrol and the incident of Hardegen and Topp having dinner with Hitler also impressed me very much. I appreciate Hardegen¡¯s direct and fearless attitude toward Hitler. Another incident that amused me was with the US ¡°Hooligan Navy¡±, a term those who served aboard the civilian crafts to fight against uboats in American waters called themselves. One embarrassing experience for the ¡°Hooligan Navy¡± was that once when off Florida, ¡°a U-boat surfaced alongside a sport cruiser and its commander yelled in excellent American: ¡°Get the hell out of here, you guys! Do you wanna get hurt? Now scram!¡± This commander can hardly be regarded as gentle and polite, however, I¡¯m really curious to know who he could be. As we know that Kretschmer can speak quite good British English, I have no idea which commander could speak perfect American English.
And George, you have asked a question which is exactly the one I want to ask. I also want to know the name of Hardegen¡¯s oil company. I only know that it¡¯s a marine oil company, so maybe his old relationships in the marine would give him a hand in business?
Best regards,
Ying
