I agree with you...and Ying\'s final comment, too. Many of these men will be loved or hated, depending on how you view their role as servicemen in a tragic war.
When I emailed my brother initially that I was going to have an opportunity to visit Herr Topp when I went to Germany, i also mentioned his awards and tonnage record. He emailed me back wondering how many tons of Americans he had killed in the war.
I was a little shocked at this, but did some math, considering average numbers and so on...and replied with a rough estimation,
\"Perhaps 30 tons of Americans.\"
My brother finally came to realize how war makes enemies of people whether they personally want to be or not. It is best summed up by Mr. Topp\'s inscription in his book to me of almost 2 years ago....\"Enemies of yesterday are friends of today.\"
