<HTML>It would be easy for someone knowledgeable of WWII submarines to identify the Surcouf, but I'm not sure blimp pilots count as knowledgeable. A blimp pilot is pretty low in the list of combat pilot positions, and as a whole, air dales were very poor at sub identification, there attitude tended to be, Sub=Bad. In the Pacific, I think that the US subs were attacked by US planes more often than Japanese planes.
What I wonder about, is a blimp crew, at the local bar, talking about a mission they were told to keep quiet, talking about a giant sub they sunk in secret. No one knew of a type XI, but the Surcouf was very well known. It had just spent 5 months in Portsmouth getting rebuilt and there was talk that some of the officers were Nazis. Details are added with retelling. The real story could be a blimp blowing up a whale, or ...a secret Nazi giant sub. Getting the truth from rumors is like trying to make a cow from a truck load of Big Macs, but I feel sure that whatever CA35 is about is a continuation of whatever the old rumor was about
