<HTML>Hi Ho Ying,
Admiral staff of the Navy , personal adjutant to the chief of the admiral staff.
U-boat school training. 3rd Uboat flotilla. z.Inf (infantry??)
(Mi) short for mittelmeer - Mediterranean. Komdt = kommandant.
Ukrz = U-kreuzer - one of the larger U-boats of the 1st WW.
Reichsmarine was the German navy between the Kaisers navy and the Kriegsmarine.
pour le merite was Germany\'s highest award at that time more commonly known as the \"Blue Max\"
I wasnt correcting your English Ying, more making a statement \"The Kptlt...\" as there was no other commander like him. He was older than some commanders and didnt enter submarines until the war had been on for over a year. A truely exceptional man.
The family was of French extraction and I think it was his grandfather that moved to Germany after some disagreements in France. It is an old military family and I believe there is some connection with the French national anthem being originally composed in the honour of his grandfather.
No doubt I will be corrected on some of this but its a long time ago since I read of it.
Fin, yes my soul-mate is from Malta G.C. the most heavily bombed place on earth with over 14,000 tons of bombs dropped on an island 17 x 9 miles. The George Cross (only one down from the Victoria Cross) was awarded to the whole Island
as it wasnt possible to give every islander one individually.
Best wishes to you both - Oh yes and all the others :-))
