<HTML>The black screen is caused by the SHII screen blanker. It pops up to conceal your Windows desktop when the game pauses or crashes. You can eliminate it by changing the start-up path command that the SHII ico uses to start the game.
Change it FROM c:\Program Files\SSI\Silent Hunter II\Shell\SH2.exe
TO: c:\Program Files\SSI\Silent Hunter II\Shell\Shell.exe

Serious gamers live on the SubClub forums (http://64.246.21.118/phpBB_subclub/)
Here you can find help and humor with Silent Hunter II and Destroyer Command, which can play together, or rather against each other.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can download a mind-boggling number of after-market software modification (aka PATCHES or MODS) from http:\\www.subsim.com They have a DOWNLOADS tab. Logic says the more patches you add to the game, the greater your risk of crashing. Therefore, you might want to avoid the BETA mods. Let those who know computers and the game do the test-driving.
Several of these patches are extremely slow to down load (<3 kbs) due to their size and the slow server speed so elect to SAVE them to your computer, then install them later. This way, if you ever have to uninstall SH2, you'll already have the patches and save downloading tem a second time. The HiRes Enhancement is a 4 hour download. The Interop 1.1 is another very slow download.
Always test your game after downloading each patch. If you can get to the mission start-up screen (The UZO with the GAME PAUSED message box), you're OK. Most serious SH2 players download in this order:
Official Interop 1.1 patch
Projekt Messerwetzer (PM015e)
If you plan to do multiplayer games (STAT games with members of The Wolfpack League), these are the only legal mods you can have. We usually have more than one copy of SH2 on our machines - one for STAT games and one for our own single player games. BEWARE: this has to be done in a special manner. Details on the SubSim forum (see Oct 23 post by Drebbel - "Second Version of SHII on Your Computer").
For single player games, you might also want these patches:
Realism Patch 1.4 (illegal for STAT games)
Vickers Oil Slick
Vickers Secondary Explosions
There are 4 patches - you need them all and in this order only - that allow the game to run in 1024 resolution. Some players report that with these installed, 32X is the maximum time compression they can achieve. I've never had that problem.
HiRes Enhancement
HiRes Service Pack
PH HiRes Service Pack
