<HTML>I would think that the pictures and log book are unrelated . RHEUMATISM is a painful condition of the joints and musc;les, characterized by inflammation, stiffness, including rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, etc. Wrapping a mans head in bandages would not help any of the above sympthoms and would only be done for something such as a head injury. Maybe this crewman was injured in an aircraft attack or fell and hit his head during a depth charge attack. I have heard of cases of RHEUMATISM on German U-boats , it was said to be brought on by the dampness and cold interior of the boat. I feel your man in the picture was injured and not a case of mental illness ( German U-boat crews called it BLECHKRANKHEIT or BLECHKOLLER , meaning tin can disease. ) .I feel if it was of a mental illness that caused the mans transfer off of the boat he would be more restrained around the hands, arms and legs so as not to flail about and be a danger to others or himself.</HTML>
