<HTML>Good question; I read somewhere that the idea was to give the crews some creature comforts which were in short supply on U-boats; along these lines this presumably was the reason there was wood paneling in some areas of the boats. The American fleet class subs in the Pacific did not use wood but they were luxury liners compared to the German U-boats. JH.</HTML>
