<HTML>There are several reasons that are involved here : one is tradtition , Two it is cheap to manufacture ( we are not talking about LENOX or WATERFORD here !!) , Three clay is cheap and very plentiful, Aluminium and steel was rare or more in demand for other projects such as airplanes etc. , four the plants that would have made the cups or plates from steel or aluminium had the heavy equipment that was needed to stamp out parts for planes ,tanks and other war material, five, it retains heat better than a thin stamped tin cup ( who wants cold coffee ! ) , six,a hot cup of coffee in an all metal cup is a very hot cup to hold without a potholder or someother insulator between your hand and the hot metal cup !!, not many of those on the bridge of a U-boat !</HTML>
