There is an interesting account of USS Gudgeon in the book “Blind Man’s Bluff “ by Sontag and Drew. Gudgeon was a “guppy†boat very much like an improved Type XX I boat; streamlined hull, diesel/electric drive, high capacity battery, snorkel, etc. In 1957 she was conducting a patrol close in off Vladivostok when she was detected by about eight Russian ASW ships. The Russians began a hold-down operation, dropping small explosive charges. and Gudgeon could not get out of it. She was underwater for sixty-four hours without snorkeling before her air ran out and she had to surface. Additional oxygen was admitted to the interior from exterior supply tanks and lithium hydroxide spread around throughout the boat to absorb the CO2. However, the CO2 as well as CO levels continued to rise and the crew became very sick. Finally she had to come up.
When she surfaced the Russians signaled “Able Ableâ€. Gudgeon signaled back “Able Able†and the Russians replied “CCCP’. Gudgeon replied “USN- on way to Japanâ€. They were requested to leave Russian waters and were thanked for the ASW exercise.
