There are countless stories about U-Boat personnel buying groceries and going to movies. The accuracy of most, if not all, of these stories is in doubt!
There were numerous U-Boats that did move into Canadian waters including down the St. Lawrence River towards Rimouski (at least). I've included a partial list of U-Boats that did make it into Canadian waters during WWII:
1. U-1228 near Cape Breton, NS Nov. 1944
2. U-548 near Cape Race, NS in May 1944
3. U-517 in St. Lawrence near Rimouski in Sept. 1942 **
U-517 in Strait of Belle Isle in August 1942
4. U-553 near Gaspe, Quebec in May 1942
5. U-132 near Gaspe, Quebec in July 1942
6. U-190 approaches to Halifax Harbour in April 1945
7. U-806 Dec. 1944
8. U-132 July 1942
9. Others: U-165, U-69, U-1223, U-1230, U-802, U-89, U-432, and more
Each of these U-Boats torpedoed at least one ship (merchant or warship) in waters in and surrounding the east coast. U-517 made its way down the St. Lawrence River...possibly the furthest.
I've heard stories here in Halifax of U-Boat personnel (most likely candidate would be from U-190 in April 1945) going to movies...but it is probably just a good yarn.
Michael Hadley's book "U-Boats Against Canada" offers the most detailed
examination of U-Boat patrols into Canadian waters.
Best of luck finding the truth to these stories!
