<HTML>Alan:

I want to correct my previous post........I stated that one "shot" of anchor chain was
equal to 10 fathom; it's equal to 15 fathom.

J.T. explained the reasons placing of the anchors on port and starboard sides and using the universal rule of proper scope of anchor chain accurately. Remember that the weight of the anchor chain is a very important consideration when anchoring a
seagoing vessel. U.S. destroyers generally use a port and starboard anchor. One
anchor uses 6 shots (90 fathom) of chain and the other uses 7 shots (105 fathom)
of chain.

It's obvious that anchoring a sea-going vessel is totally dependent on the depth of the anchorage, no matter what its displacement is.
