The liferaft that I was on from a British ship June 1942 was a wooden structure about 8 feet square with an area across the centre to place your feet. The floatation was air filled large steel barrels. Water was in steel containers within the enclosed area as was the food consisting of hard tack biscuits which were impossible to bite into without soaking. Stowed on the outside of the shrouds and released by a wooden fid on a lanyard. This liferaft was the general standard for the majority of British ships.
