<HTML>This steamer hadbeen chased for 2 days by the sub. Finzi, which was unable to reach firing position and provided da Vinci with the freighter's routing info. Gazzana, the CO of da Vinci, then pursued, attacked & sank the Lulworth Hill with 2 torpedoes. His action reports states that sadly there was only 1 survivor and he was rescued by the sub! If there were more they probably were missed or did not want to be rescued.
It would certainly go counter the precedents set by Italian sub skippers in rescuing survivors to have fired, needlessly, on the ones from this sinking, Gazzana was a well respected officer & gentleman, unlike some Allied sub Captains, but that's another story.
