<HTML>Hi Ying, Ted, and MPC!!
A very interesting post Ying!! That is an excellent question. I think MPC is right about being in a position at the right time and the right place. I also think that Adm. Doenitz\'s writing while he was imprisoned after WWI had something to do with it. Maybe someone came across it or Admirtal Doenitz simply showed it around. I am almost convinced he also got the job by persuasion and a pure will to advance the state of Germany\'s u-boot arm. I think personality and leadership traits defintely made him stand out. Don\'t forget that not all aces make good \"big picture\" strategists. I\'m an airport planner. My job is too look at the overall picture and make sure everything conforms and matches everything else as put forth in the document standards. The engineers in our office do the detailed work per section of the project. They are not as concerned about the big picture of things as I am. They are focused on making one more parts work so that the project as a whole comes together. I am not degrading engineers in any way as I work with them closely and admire their technical ability, but they do not make great overall organizer/leaders (of course there are some that do) because that is the way they\'ve been educated. Men like Adm. Doenitz stood above the rest because he looked at the \"big picture\".
That is my opinion on the matter. Like MPC, I will look forward to more opinions as this is an excellent question (kudos to Ying!).
Best regards to all,
