A useful book is \'a collectors guide to U-Boat Insignia\' by Gordon Williamson and Jamie Cross (which I think it is still available). I found it most useful in helping to spot some of the fakes while starting my own collection - it paid for itself very quickly!

I have a couple of badges (one in its original cardboard carton) and other bits that I\'m going to be selling so if your interested or would like Jamie\'s web address, email me.
